GhostChat on Webflow: help

Everything the GhostChat app does on your Webflow site, and how to undo it.

Set it up

  1. Install GhostChat from the Webflow Marketplace and choose the site to connect.
  2. Paste your GhostChat Site ID. You’ll find it in GhostChat under Sites → Install (no account yet? create one).
  3. Click Publish now, or publish from Webflow as usual. Webflow applies code changes only when a site is published.

Colors, greeting, position and your inbox live in the GhostChat dashboard.

What it adds to your site

  • What: one small script, added through Webflow’s custom code feature and hosted by Webflow. It adds the GhostChat chat widget script, loaded from api.ghostchat.dev. GhostChat maintains and updates the widget, so new widget versions reach your site without any change on your side.
  • Where: every page of the site, placed just before </body>.
  • Why: to show the chat bubble so visitors can message you.
  • Nothing else: it doesn’t change your pages, styles, forms or other scripts.

What the chat widget collects

  • No cookies. Nothing is stored in a visitor’s browser until they open the chat; then a session ID is kept in its local storage.
  • The messages visitors send, and a name or email if they choose to give one.
  • The pages a visitor views before and after opening the chat, so you can see where they were.
  • Approximate country and network, derived from the IP address, which is used only transiently for security.

The full detail is in GhostChat’s privacy policy.

What the app stores

Your Webflow site’s ID and the access Webflow grants the app (encrypted). It’s used only to add, change or remove the script and to publish when you click Publish now.

For signing in by email, a one-way hash of the email address of the Webflow account that connected the site, made with a secret key. The address itself isn’t stored. An address you type to get a sign-in link is used only to send that email.

All of it is deleted when you remove GhostChat here, and within a day if you uninstall the app in Webflow instead.

Sign in from another browser

The browser you connected the site from stays signed in. On another browser or computer, open the app and choose Sign in with email. Enter the email of the Webflow account that connected the site, and you’ll get a sign-in link that works once, within 15 minutes. You don’t need to connect the site again.

Sign out, at the bottom of the site screen, signs out only that browser. GhostChat stays on your site, and the app keeps its access.

Change the Site ID

Open the app, enter the new Site ID under “Change GhostChat Site ID”, save, and publish.

Remove GhostChat

  1. Open the app and click Remove GhostChat from this site.
  2. Choose Remove and publish now, or remove and publish later from Webflow. The chat stays on your live pages until the site is published.

Removing ends the app’s access to your site. Uninstalling the app in Webflow without removing it here also works: Webflow removes the app’s code when you next publish your site.

Requirements

  • Webflow allows custom code only on a site with a paid site plan, or in a paid workspace.
  • A GhostChat account. GhostChat has a free plan and paid plans; see ghostchat.dev/pricing.

Common questions

I already pasted the GhostChat snippet into my site settings. That’s fine: the app sees it and never loads the widget twice. You can delete the pasted snippet once the app is set up.

The chat doesn’t show. Publish the site, then open the published site (not the Designer canvas).
